No matter what your experience with cycling is, riding a bike can be a great way to get healthy exercise. That seems obvious, however did you know that the League of American Bicyclists has designated New York City as a Bicycle Friend Community? This designation recognizes New York's commitment to improving conditions for bicycling and its investment in bicycling programs and facilities. With city streets crowded with vehicles and mass transit lines at or near capacity the number of cyclists in New York has grown by an estimated 75 percent since 2000. In the award's five year existence 174 communities have applied for the designation and 70 have been successful. New York City is the only community in the region to be designated a Bike Friendly Community.
